What is Claude Design?

Claude Design is a visual workspace inside Claude, launched on April 17, 2026 by Anthropic Labs and powered by Claude Opus 4.7. It is Anthropic's answer to the question of why you should have to open a design tool to make something visual in the first place. You describe what you want in plain language and Claude creates a first version that you then refine iteratively.

It is explicitly not a replacement for Figma or Adobe. It is an exploration and drafting environment: the place where you go from idea to first visual concept in minutes instead of hours. For polish and complex production designs you often still move on to specialized tools.

Claude Design runs on Opus 4.7, Anthropic's newest flagship model, introduced alongside the launch. Opus 4.7 is trained specifically on visual work and design reasoning, hitting 98.5% on visual acuity benchmarks compared to 54.5% from the previous generation.

How do you work in Claude Design?

Four ways to refine: chat, inline comments, direct text edits and auto-generated sliders.

Chat

Type what you want to change - 'make this tighter', 'more whitespace', 'use a warmer palette'. Claude updates the whole document or only the selected block.

Inline comments

Click any element (title, button, image) and drop an instruction. Claude works through those tickets the way a designer triages notes from a PM.

Direct text edits

Double click text and type your change. Useful for small corrections where you don't want the full layout regenerated.

Auto sliders

For every design Claude generates relevant sliders - whitespace, contrast, radius, type density. Drag until it feels right.

What do you make with it?

Five concrete use cases where Claude Design delivers the biggest time savings.

Pitch deck (10 slides)

Describe company, problem, solution and metrics. Claude builds a concept deck. Refine per slide, export to PPTX or PDF.

< 30 min

Landing page concept

Hero, features, testimonials, FAQ and CTA. Ready to hand off to Claude Code for production code or to your designer for polish.

< 20 min

Customer one-pager

On-brand PDF with headline, value prop and social proof. Ideal for sales follow-ups and consultants.

< 15 min

Clickable prototype (3-5 screens)

Login, dashboard, detail and action screens. Share by URL with stakeholders - no Figma account needed on the viewer side.

< 45 min

Moodboard or brand exploration

Ask Claude for three directions with different typography and color palettes. Pick, iterate, lock in.

< 20 min

Marketing campaign visuals

Social posts, banners and email headers with a consistent visual language. Export per asset or as a zip.

< 30 min

Export wherever you need

Five export options per document. Pick per use case.

PDF

Client-ready, print-safe.

Shareable URL

Live link, no login required on the viewer side.

PPTX

Editable in PowerPoint or Keynote.

Canva

Practical rule: Claude Design for the first 80% in half the time, Figma or Canva for the last 20% of polish.

What does Claude Design cost?

No separate license. Included from the Pro plan upward.

Pro

$20 /month

For individuals. Claude Design included, same usage limits as chat.

Max

$100 - $200 /month

For power users. 5x or 20x more usage than Pro, including Claude Design.

Team

$25 /user/month

For teams of 5+. Admin tools, centralized billing, Claude Design included.

Enterprise

Contact sales

SSO, audit logs, extended data controls. No training on your data. SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001, HIPAA-ready.

Usage runs on Task Budgets. For heavy work you can set effort levels (high, xhigh) that spend more tokens for better output.

Design system integration

Claude Design can read your existing design system - both codebase (tokens, components) and design files (color palettes, typography, spacing). Everything you build after that follows your colors, typefaces, button styles and spacing scale.

For teams that care about brand consistency this is the single most important feature. You don't get generic AI output that looks chatbot-made - you get something that fits your brand. Handoff to Claude Code then produces production-ready code using the same tokens.

Tips for better output

Five concrete patterns that immediately improve results.

Give context, not just an instruction

Instead of 'make a pitch deck', give: audience, tone, 5 key messages, examples of style you like. The more specific, the better.

Use references - 'in the style of X'

'In the style of Stripe', 'with the visual calm of Linear', 'with the warmth of Notion's marketing'. Claude knows those styles and calibrates to them.

Iterate per section

Don't try to get everything perfect at once. Work section by section. Happy with the hero? Only then tune the features block.

Load your brand first

Paste your style guide, upload your logo, link your design system. Prevents 80% of rework and delivers on-brand output.

Use sliders for fine-tuning

Big changes via chat, small ones via sliders. Claude generates relevant sliders per document - use them instead of another prompt.

Limitations

Where Claude Design is not (yet) the right tool in April 2026.

Research preview status

Features change, bugs happen, docs sometimes lag. Don't yet depend on it fully for production workflows.

Complex design systems

For very large systems (dozens of components, multiple themes) Claude can occasionally mix up tokens. Check handoff output.

Print quality and typography

For print pieces with strict typographic requirements (brochures, books) you hit limits. An experienced designer still wins on type detail.

Image rights and stock photos

Images Claude generates are usable, but always check brand-safe content and stock photo rights before external publication.

Offline or without account

Browser only, with an active Claude plan. No offline mode, no guest access.

Real-time multi-user collaboration

No live multiplayer like Figma. Collaboration goes via shared URLs and handoff, not simultaneous editing.

Privacy and data use

Whatever you input and generate in Claude Design is not used to train models - that is the default across all Claude plans. For Team and Enterprise there are extra controls: SSO, audit logs, retention settings and the option to choose data residency (e.g. Anthropic Ireland Limited for EEA/UK).

Anthropic is certified for SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001, ISO 42001 and HIPAA-ready. For confidential work the rule is: don't put customer data in prompts you wouldn't email, and use a Team or Enterprise account for production.

Frequently asked questions

Which plan do I need for Claude Design?

+

Pro at minimum ($20/month). Claude Design is included in Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise and uses your existing usage limits. No separate license.

Which file formats can I export?

+

PDF, shareable URL, PPTX, Canva and Claude Code bundle. Pick the right format per document and moment.

What is the Claude Code handoff?

+

A production-ready bundle with components, design tokens and code. Ideal for teams that want to convert a landing page or prototype directly into production code.

Does Claude Design replace Figma?

+

No. It does not replace Figma for design teams working on complex products. For founders, marketers and PMs it can replace Figma because it's often good enough fast enough.

Are my prompts and outputs used for training?

+

No. Not by default on any plan. Team and Enterprise get additional contractual guarantees and data controls.

Does Claude Design work with my own design system?

+

Yes. Claude can read your codebase and design files and uses your tokens, components and typography. One of its strongest features.

Is Claude Design good for print?

+

For online use cases, PDFs and decks: yes. For print work with strict typographic requirements: limited - a designer still wins on type detail.

Can I test Claude Design without paying?

+

No, you need an active Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise plan. But you can start on Pro for $20 and decide within a week whether it works for you.
